Course Outline
Over the two days you will learn the basic construction of a dry stone wall, how to place secure footings, to place stones to a line and batter, the use of throughstones and copes and, most importantly, what makes it stay up without any mortar. The theory is simple, but it takes practice to do it well, and so most of the course will be hands-on and practical.
The emphasis will be on teamwork and safe working and there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and get individual feedback.
Please note that though the course should be accessible to any moderately fit and active person, walling is an inherently physical activity. If you are unsure please contact Mason’s Walling to discuss your concern.
Walling equipment will be provided but please bring your own lunch, drinks and suitable clothing inc toe capped shoes. Mason’s Walling is covered by full Public Liability Insurance. The cost for the two days is £140 and it will run from 10am to 3:30pm each day
Tutor Details
Your tutor on this course will be me, Tim Mason (hence Mason’s Walling - a very appropriate name). Prior to the last decade spent dry stone walling, I taught in secondary schools for 20 years, and so running walling courses combines two of my great loves.
Venue
The venue will be Woodland Farm, home of Weston Underwood Quarries. Set in attractive countryside, tucked away down a quiet lane from the pretty village of Weston Underwood, the quarry supplies stone for many local building and walling projects. Lots of the walls shown on the Mason’s Walling website were constructed using their cream limestone. We will be working in the open air, but shelter will be provided at breaktimes if needed, and toilet facilities are available.
